Famous Bird Market Reportedly Demolished in Lahore
Shopkeepers have strongly criticized the Punjab government for demolishing the entire Bhati Bird Market near Data Darbar, calling the operation an economic disaster that caused millions in losses and killed several birds and animals.
The Lahore Development Authority (LDA) carried out the demolition early Wednesday morning as part of the Bhati Chowk remodeling project, reportedly to remove encroachments and ease traffic congestion in the area.
Traders Decry Sudden Operation
“The government has destroyed us economically — it has killed us,” said one shopkeeper, expressing outrage over the demolition. He claimed that heavy machinery arrived at dawn, and within hours, all 152 shops were razed. “They didn’t even care for the innocent birds and animals that were buried alive under the debris,” he added.
Another trader said that shopkeepers had been in constant contact with officials from the LDA and the deputy commissioner’s office. “The authorities had earlier agreed to pay compensation before demolishing the shops,” he said. “But the teams suddenly showed up at night and started tearing everything down without giving us time to move our birds, worth millions, to safety.”
LDA Defends Operation
An LDA spokesperson said the bird market had been set up illegally on 16 kanals of state land, which falls within the Bhati Chowk remodeling project area. “The project aims to resolve traffic congestion and reduce dust and noise pollution,” he said.
The spokesperson denied claims of bird deaths during the operation. “Shopkeepers had already removed their birds and goods before the demolition. If anyone has solid evidence, they should present it,” he added.
Traders Seek CM’s Intervention
The affected shopkeepers have urged the Chief Minister of Punjab to take notice of the incident, compensate them for their losses, and hold those responsible accountable for the alleged cruelty to animals and economic damage.
